Apply for an NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

Are you interested in doing real research while you are still an undergraduate student? Consider applying for an NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU).

The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), supports undergraduate students in participating in hands-on research projects in STEM fields such as computer science, data science, engineering, biology, and more. (NSF – U.S. National Science Foundation)

In an REU program, students typically spend about 10 weeks working with faculty researchers and a team of other students on a real research project at a university or research institution. (academicsuccess.ucf.edu)

Many REU programs provide:

  • A stipend (often $4,000–$8,000 for the summer)
  • Housing and travel support
  • Mentorship from faculty researchers
  • Opportunities to present research at the end of the program

These programs are highly valuable for students interested in:

  • Building research experience
  • Preparing for graduate school
  • Strengthening resumes for internships and jobs
  • Exploring new areas of STEM

Most REU opportunities are open to undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and are currently enrolled in a college or university. (BIO REU)
