| Come learn about the current science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) landscape and Great Minds in STEM’s (GMiS) approach to this new environment from a pre-college, collegiate and employment outlook perspective. GMiS is aware of the challenges along the STEM career pathway, particularly for women and persons of color. We understand the mitigating ripple effects the pandemic has caused on students’ academic retention and persistence to graduation. We are cognizant of the mental health, financial and social climate stressors that have (re)emerged from the pandemic. Yet, as we acknowledge these challenges, we are also called to acknowledge the resiliency of our underserved communities in meeting these challenges. To that effect, we know it is mission critical to engage students in STEM-career readiness due to the increasing job market demand for technical talent. GMiS’ approach to the state of STEM is an asset-model approach that does not focus on the benchmarks of low achievement gaps, but rather intentionally leverages students’ cultural background, skills and knowledge to strengthen and empower them as the next generation of diverse, STEM technical talent.
